Chronicle Companion does not operate, connect to, or maintain any cloud servers, databases, or analytics services. All browsing telemetry is communicated exclusively to your own device via local loopback HTTP (http://127.0.0.1:4242) to the Chronicle desktop application. Your browsing history never leaves your personal computer.

1 Scope & Purpose

This Privacy Policy applies to the Chronicle Companion browser extension across Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc) and Mozilla Firefox.

The extension serves a single, dedicated purpose: to communicate active website domain hostnames and sanitized URLs locally to the Chronicle desktop time-tracking application installed on your personal computer.

2 What Information Is Processed

When actively browsing in a normal browser window, the extension detects:

Website Domain & URL: The protocol, hostname, and path of the currently focused tab (e.g., https://github.com/profile or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=...) so Chronicle can categorize your web activity in your local timeline.
Page & Tab Title: The standard title of the active tab to identify active media, documents, or articles.
Sanitized URL Parameters: Marketing and tracking identifiers (such as utm_*, fbclid, gclid, msclkid) are automatically stripped before logging.

3 What Information Is NEVER Collected

Chronicle Companion is engineered with strict isolation:

NO Keystrokes or Input: We do not log keystrokes, form fields, searches, or text inputs.
NO Page Content Scraping: The extension does not inject content scripts into web pages and never inspects page bodies, articles, or messages.
NO Passwords or Credentials: Authentication tokens, credentials, and cookies are never accessed.
NO External Telemetry: No analytics SDKs or tracking libraries are embedded in the extension.
NO Personal or Financial Data: We collect zero personal identity, location, or payment information.

4 Permissions Used & Justifications

The extension requests only the minimum permissions necessary to function:

Permission	Why It Is Needed
`tabs`	Detects the URL and title of the active tab in the currently focused window.
`storage`	Stores local connection state and error diagnostics in local browser storage (`chrome.storage.local`).
`alarms`	Schedules a low-frequency 1-minute keepalive alarm to wake the extension and keep passive media (e.g., YouTube, podcasts) fresh in Chronicle without draining battery.
`http://127.0.0.1:4242/*`	Allows sending local HTTP loopback packets directly to the Chronicle desktop companion server on your own PC.

5 Private Browsing / Incognito Enforcement

Private browsing settings are strictly respected:

Disabled By Default: Chronicle Companion is strictly disabled in Incognito (Chrome), InPrivate (Edge), and Private Browsing (Firefox) windows.
Zero Accidental Leakage: If you open an Incognito tab, the extension refuses to track or transmit telemetry.
Explicit Opt-in Only: Only if you manually open your browser's extension settings and explicitly enable "Allow in Incognito" will private tabs be reported, and Chronicle badges them clearly as InPrivate.

6 Third-Party Sharing & Monetization

We do not sell, rent, monetize, or disclose your data to any third parties:

No Advertising: The extension contains no ads, banners, or sponsor links.
No Data Brokers: We do not partner with data brokers or marketing firms.
No Data Monetization: Your browsing habits belong strictly to you. Chronicle is a privacy-first personal productivity application.

7 Data Retention & User Control

Because all data is stored locally in your SQLite database on your device:

Full Local Control: You can inspect, search, filter, or delete any domain or page at any time directly in Chronicle's Domains tab.
Permanent Deletion: Selecting domains or pages and clicking "Delete Selected" permanently purges those records from your local database.
Uninstallation: Removing the extension immediately halts all tracking. Uninstalling Chronicle completely removes all local database files.
